Itching for a flight, redux

Remind me never to rely on my mental geography. My tentative plan was: Los Angeles, Japan (Okinawa, Osaka/Kyoto, Kanazawa, Tokyo, Sapporo?), Taiwan, South Korea, Shànghǎi, etc. Today, I checked the map and found that Taiwan is far, far to the … Continue reading

Switching gears

Every time I visit home, I take the opportunity to indulge in some good old capitalism. My gear list has been pretty consistent, although I haven’t updated in a long while. The main changes include: Dell Mini 9 MacBook Air, … Continue reading

Itching for a flight

For a while back there, I was thinking of spending a month or two in India. Always intrigued, open mind, never been. Friend Jason recommended February and March as the ideal months to go, when the weather’s still merely beastly … Continue reading

Stuck in the middle with me

Romania is a beautiful country, with storybook ‘old town’ areas, fortified churches sparkling like gems in the countryside, deep history, friendly people, and delicious dishes. Two weeks into it, though, and I was getting itchy. Not just from mosquito bites … Continue reading

Outstanbul

One long bus ride from Kapadokya, and I am back in İstanbul. (My fingers keep wanting to type “İnstanbul”. Must be due to years of typing “instance”, “instantiate”, “instant noodles”, and other such examples from my previous life.) The 11-hour … Continue reading

Like riding a bicycle

It’s no secret that I’ve been sedentary lately: Since late May, I spent 10 nights in Palermo, 3 weeks in Giardini Naxos, and 4 weeks in İstanbul. The funny thing is, I never intended to stay so long at any … Continue reading

The most dangerous game

I’ve been in Giardini Naxos for almost one week now. It’s a cute little sea-side resort town. Available activities involve driving around the countryside, visiting tiny Sicilian villages, hiking up Mt. Etna, soaking up the sun at the beach, and … Continue reading

To Palermo… and Beyond!

I’ve been in Palermo since May 20. The weather’s been a mix of cruddy and partly-crappy, so I’ve been taking it easy, mainly walking around, visiting churches, and eating pasta and sfincione and pan cà meusa and gelato. The weather … Continue reading

Round the world in 239 days

Round-The-World (RTW) travel has become pretty popular in recent years. Airline consortiums (Star Alliance, oneworld, etc.) support this with special ticketing programs. Although there are restrictions, the benefits can be quite good, too. For example, the air travel must typically … Continue reading

Sampling port at Solar do Vinho do Porto

Solar do Vinho do Porto is a wine bar with a garden overlooking the Rio Douro. It occupies the basement of the Museo Romántico, near the Jardins do Palácio Cristal. I visited shortly before sunset.
